Getting back to the Basics
The Primal/Ancestral Health philosophy focuses on elements of gene expression that can be controlled through lifestyle behaviors to positively influence health and longevity. Nearly all genes that influence health and longevity can be manipulated and optimized through complimentary lifestyle behaviors. Altering the environmental signals that you send your genes can render familiar predispositions to health problems or excess body fat storage, for example, virtually irrelevant. The Ancestral Health model is designed to specify which lifestyle behaviors promote optimal gene expression. Genes are commonly viewed as fixed traits that you inherit form your parents such hair and eye colors, adult height, personality characteristics and predispositions to alcoholism and even heart disease. Your behaviors have minimal influence over heritable traits such as these. However, you CAN directly influence genes involved in health and wellness such as genes that influence muscle development, body fat storage, inflammation, hormone balance, gut health, and many other aspects of general health, wellness, and longevity through your lifestyle choices. For example, even if you carry a strong predisposition toward excess body fat or disease in your familial genes (traits that you inherited from your parents) you can override these predispositions with lifestyle behavior that promote optimal gene expression.
